ApeCoin DAO-n Low #39
To the Bored,
Good evening and thank you for reading the 39th edition of the Bored Ape Gazetteâs ApeCoin DAO-n Low newsletter!
This weekâs newsletter will be all about ApeChain as the polls for one of the biggest votes in DAO history are set to close tomorrow night!
This vote comes 22 months after Yuga Labs brought up the need for an ApeChain following the companyâs Otherdeed mint that saw insanely high gas fees.
âWe're sorry for turning off the lights on Ethereum for a while,â Yuga Labs tweeted on April 30, 2022. âIt seems abundantly clear that ApeCoin will need to migrate to its own chain in order to properly scale. We'd like to encourage the DAO to start thinking in this direction.â
Following the Otherdeed mint, talks of an ApeChain fell by the waist side as the ApeCoin DAO worked on staking and governance for a year and a half.
But Discussions around ApeChain resumed in October 2023 after Polygon Labs Co-Founder, Sandeep Nailwal, posted an idea on the ApeCoin DAOâs discourse forum that called for the creation of a â zero-knowledge powered Layer-2 â ApeChain for ApeCoin.
From there, Optimism, Arbitrum, and ZkSync all threw their hats in the ring and wrote Ape Improvement Proposals on why they were the right team to build the ApeCoin DAO an Apechain.
At first, the DAO planned on having each ApeChain proposal go up for a vote individually, but quickly shifted to having the DAO's administrator, Webslinger, hold a Request For Proposal process where the DAO would choose between the various ApeChain AIPs on December 28th, 2023.
Since then, Polygon Labs, Optimism, Arbitrum, and ZkSync have all submitted their plans for an Apechain to the ApeCoin DAO and are currently on the âSelection of proponent to build ApeChainâ ballot.
Recently, the ApeCoin DAO shared a graphic that broke down the four possible ApeChain ideas comparing everything from cost per TX to licensing type.
Find out a bit more about the four ApeChain proposals and why they think theyâre the right teams for Ape below:
AIP-377 titled âApeChain Bid // ApeChain A-Team - Research, Deploy, Manage ApeChainâ
Lumberg and his A-Team believe that the DAO should deploy its ApeChain via Optimism, issue a new ApeChain Governance Token, and join the foundationâs Superchain!
âOptimism is the leading choice for the A-Team to deploy ApeChain, as part of the Optimism Superchain ecosystem,â Lumberg wrote. âThis will align and expand ApeChain into a large community of developers and users who believe in user protection, decentralization, and economic autonomy. In addition, the team has a vision of contributing toward the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem by becoming core contributors in the Optimism Foundation.â
AIP-378 titled âApeChain Bid // ApeChain Developed with Arbitrum Technology with Growth Led by Horizen Labsâ
ApeCoin DAO launch partner and creator of the ApeCoin DAOâs staking system, Horizen Labs, has team up with the Arbitrum foundation to possibly build the DAO an ApeChain.
In their ApeChain proposal, Horizen Labs and Arbitrum explained that if the ApeCoin DAO chooses their ApeChain plan then the community will be able to use $Ape as the ApeChainâs native gas token, generate revenue via a transaction fee, experience low gas fees, customize the chainâs code as the community sees fit, and have self-executing governance.
AIP-388 titled âApeChain Bid // ApeChain - A zk-Powered Layer-2 to Support ApeCoin Growthâ
In this proposal, Polygonâs Sandeeop Nailwal explained that the DAO should launch and maintain its own zero-knowledge Layer-2 chain  using Polygonâs Chain Development Kit.
âThis proposal includes (1) the launch of a dedicated ApeCoin zk-L2 chain (âApeChainâ) built and maintained by Gateway.fm, a premier rollup as a service (âRaaSâ) provider that builds Web3 infrastructure and tooling products with advisory support from Polygon Labs and oversight of such building and maintenance to be conducted by the ApeCoin DAO Foundation,â Nailwal wrote.â (2) ecosystem collaboration with Polygon Labs to help stimulate the growth of ApeCoin-integrated projects (experiences, entertainment, games and consumer applications) and ApeChain-related public goods (middleware, marketplaces, and necessary infrastructure) and (3) a development fund to help stimulate the growth of ApeCoin-integrated projects (experiences, entertainment, games and consumer applications) and ApeChain-related public goods (middleware, marketplaces, and necessary infrastructure).â
AIP-384 titled âApeChain Bid // Built using the fastest and cheapest ZK technology in production (zkSyncâs ZK Stack)â
In this proposal, Matter Labsâ Omar Azhar wrote that the DAO should build its ApeChain in the zkSync ecosystem because this will be the fastest and cheapest option.
âThe Ape community, a proven trailblazer and the largest NFT community, aligns perfectly with our vision,â Azhar wrote. âAs you venture into gaming and other verticals, the zkSync ecosystem stands as an ideal partner to bolster your ambitious growth plans. All ZK Stack chains are called hyperchains and all hyperchains come fully interoperable with each other. ApeChain and Pudgy Penguins building on zkSync will cement zkSync as the number 1 choice for blue-chip, Ethereum-based NFT projects. This will consolidate brands, liquidity and users to unprecedented collaboration opportunity without the threat of bridge hacks that can destroy brands and IP overnight.â
ApeCoin DAO contributors have until Wednesday, February 14th, at 9 P.M. EST to cast their coins and decide who will create the DAOâs ApeChain.
