The ApeCoin DAO-N Low #9
To the Bored,
Good evening and thank you for reading the ninth edition of the Bored Ape Gazetteās āThe ApeCoin DAO-N Low.ā To begin, I hope that folks celebrating Thanksgiving had a wonderful holiday.Ā I am truly thankful for this community and the encouragement that the Gazette has received over the last year and a half! I love covering this community and I look forward to sharing news and updates for years to come!
With that said, let's get to the āDAO-N Lowā on the ApeCoin DAO.
Phase two of the ApeCoin DAOās three phase Special Council election season began yesterday as the DAO took to Twitter and announced that 42 $Ape holders have thrown their hats in the ring.Ā
āGM $APE fam, thank you to the entire ApeCoin DAO community for their applications in becoming a Council member in the DAOās first ever election,ā the ApeCoin DAO tweeted. āWe have just completed Phase 1 of the nomination process, which is the KYC and verification process for all applications. The Foundation engaged two separate independent third-party service providers to perform this verification, which included but not limited to screening against sanctions, politically exposed persons, and background checks. The result is that there are 42 nominees. Their nomination profiles are now available in Discourse under Special Council Nominees.ā
Now that all the prospective candidatesā campaigns have officially kicked off, the ApeCoin DAO will be holding a 14 day āCommunity Discussionā to start phase two. During this time $Ape holders will be able to learn more about the candidates and ask them questions on their candidate Discourse pages.Ā
To make it easier to learn about the candidates, the Bored Ape Gazette went through each candidatesā Discourse page and created several Twitter threads with quotes from the candidates on why you should vote for them. You can check out those threads here:
Following this two-week community discussion period, the ApeCoin DAO will be holding a community vote via snapshot to select the top five candidates.Ā
The top five vote-getting candidates will move on to the next round and will become nominees for the three Special Council seats. The window for $Ape holders to cast their votes will be from December 15th through December 21st, according to the Election AIPs that the DAO approved earlier this month.
Once the DAO narrows its candidate pool down to five nominees, the ApeCoin community will hold a second vote to determine which three nominees will be on the Special Council in January.Ā
Take a look at the ApeCoin DAOās Special Council elections timeline below:
As the ApeCoin DAO determines who will be on the Special Council next, Horizen Labs gave the community an update on staking.Ā
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Horizen Labs took to Twitter and announced that staking will go live on December 12th and that US based $Ape holders will not be allowed to use Horizen Labsā front end staking user interface.
āPlease note that ApeStake.io will be available to users in most countries; however users in the following countries or regions will be geo-blocked: United States, Canada, North Korea, Syria, Iran, Cuba, Russia, Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk,ā Hozien Labs posted in its geo-blocking section. āWe are aware that geo-blocking some users in North America is inconvenient for many members of the ApeCoin community. Unfortunately, in todayās regulatory environment, we had no good alternative.ā
Following Horizen Labs' post, the Bored Ape Gazette reached out to Horizen Labs Founder and ApeCoin Special Council Member, Dean Steinbeck, for clarification.Ā
āThe smart contract is open source and can be accessed by anyone, anywhere,ā Steinbeck told the Gazette. āI expect many third parties to offer a UI that interacts with the smart contract and be available to users in jurisdictions that our UI does not service.ā
When asked about when he and Horizen Labs made the decision to geo-block certain users, Steinbeck told the Bored Ape Gazette that he could not get into specifics. āI canāt go into details on timing,ā he said. āWe tried to find ways to work around it but ultimately had to submit.ā
Following Horizen Labs' post about geo-blocking US based users, the ApeCoin DAO reminded $Ape holders that anyone can interact with a smart contract.Ā
āGM $APE fam,ā the ApeCoin DAO tweeted. āWe want to remind the community that one of the benefits of decentralized finance is that anybody can interact with a smart contract or develop clients and interfaces that allow users to interact with smart contracts.ā
After the DAOās post, the Bored Ape Gazette reached out to Special Council Member, Maaria Bajwa, and found out that the decision to geo-block certain users was a Horizen Labs choice and not an ApeCoin DAO decision.Ā āThis is all regarding horizons GUI (Graphical User Interface), not the smart contract,ā she said.
The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow this staking story and will let you know more about how to stake as new information becomes available.Ā
As the Apecoin DAOās staking protocol prepares to go live in the next two weeks, the DAOās official ApeCoin marketplace opened its virtual doors for the first time on November 23rd.Ā
āYou've been waiting for this,ā Snag Solutions Founder ZHeerwagen tweeted. āToday @snag_solutions is launching the official @ApeCoin DAO marketplace. The custom marketplace includes unique features built specifically for the BAYC and Otherside communities, including ApeCoin staking and NFT metadata integrations. Staking and daily rewards are directly embedded within the buy and sell flow, and weāll continue improving the experience by adding filters for Apes with $APE staked, listed sets, and more.ā
